The challenge
The aim of the project was to develop (and implement) a data story that would use open climate and weather data to give the citizens of Konstanz a clear understanding of climate change and its local consequences. The data story was to focus on the necessity and potential of urban climate adaptation measures. Together with the Smart Green City project team, texts and various visualizations were to be developed and created from various data sources. The data story was to be made easily accessible to citizens on the Smart Green City project website and the code was to be published.
The data basis
The data story uses weather and climate data from more than 50 years of history from the DWD weather station in Konstanz, as well as open data from the city's 12 weather stations.
The approach
The CorrelAid team worked with the Smart Green City team to determine the needs and requirements for the data story and then developed a content framework and interactive graphics for the story. The implementation was carried out using the Observable Framework. Particular attention was paid to ensuring that the site remains easy to maintain for the city in the future. In addition, two expert interviews were embedded in the form of videos. You can find the data story here!

The impact
The data story promotes evidence-based decision-making processes in politics and gives citizens transparent access to relevant information. It serves as an innovative tool for communicating data-based findings in an accessible, comprehensible, and effective manner. A particular lever lies in the multiplier effect: the approaches and results of the data story can be taken up by the other 72 smart cities and other municipalities in Germany and transferred through the openly available code.
