Git (https://git-scm.com/) is a free and open source distributed software version control system. Codeberg (https://codeberg.org/) is a non-profit, community-led effort that provides Git hosting for free, open-source projects built by human communities. Codeberg is a non-commercial, human-centric, European alternative to Github.
This is a beginner friendly workshop for those who have no or little prior experience in Git and Codeberg. It offers a hands-on, action-packed experience to use these tools for real, with real-time guidance and support.

The goals of this workshop are however not only technical but also:

  • To raise awareness on viable European solutions such as Codeberg
  • To give choices back to users, now knowing such viable alternatives exist

Our rundown:

  • Motivation and goals
  • Typical software version control processes
  • What is Git, and how does it support these processes
  • What is Codeberg, and how does it support these processes
  • Using Git on your laptop, hands-on
  • Using Git with Codeberg, hands-on
  • Open exchange and next steps

Chris will be leading this workshop. He is one of CorrelAid's Local Chapter Heads in Cologne, a software engineer and IT manager with over 30 years experience working worldwide.
